Morocco anticipates an 80% increase in avocado production for the next season

Producer Ahmed Bouljid estimates that the harvest will reach 110,000 tons in the Larache region, with a significant increase in the volume of avocados destined for export.

Avocado growers in the northwestern region of Larache, Morocco, are anticipating a significant increase in volumes for the upcoming season. While some estimate growth of 33% to 50% compared to the previous season, Ahmed Bouljid, owner of Entrepôt Frigorifique Lixus, predicts an 80% increase. This would represent 50,000 tons more than last year, with a total production of 110,000 tons, of which between 95,000 and 100,000 tons would be destined for export, provided weather conditions remain favorable.

Bouljid attributes this optimism to exceptional weather conditions. "The season's success was already foreseeable in July, when we avoided the chergui, a hot, dry wind, and the March rains were better than the previous year," he commented. Furthermore, the region's tropical climate allowed for a natural thinning of 10% of the fruit, which has led to an improvement in avocado quality, with a greater number of larger sizes compared to last season.

Furthermore, Bouljid emphasized that the expansion of productive areas, with the maturation of trees planted three years ago, will contribute to the increased volume. If conditions remain favorable, the season could become one of the most memorable in terms of production, quality, and sales results.

The first harvests of green-skinned varieties are expected in weeks 38/39, while the Hass variety will begin to be harvested in week 43, with peak production starting around December 15th. This peak is expected to last until February, providing stability to the sector and benefiting all stakeholders, from producers to consumers.
