Western Australian avocados arrive in India, boosting its fruit market
With the elimination of tariffs, Western Australia exports more than 320 tons of avocados to India, marking a milestone in economic cooperation between the two countries.
At the height of the harvest season, avocados from Western Australia have begun arriving in India, bolstering the fruit's market growth in the South Asian country. More than 320 tons of avocados, valued at over $1.6 million, have been exported by sea, primarily from Delroy Orchards in the Southern Forests region.
The first commercial shipment took place in late 2023, following the elimination of a 30% tariff on Australian Hass avocados, thanks to the Trade and Economic Cooperation Agreement between Australia and India. This agreement has facilitated the entry of Australian avocados into the Indian market, allowing for greater competitiveness and access for Western Australian producers.
Delroy Orchards' avocados are packed in Donnybrook, with plans to expand packing operations to a new facility in Waroona. The avocado industry is the highest-value sector in Western Australia's fruit farming, reaching a record production of 65,000 tonnes in 2023-2024. Supply is expected to increase further over the next five years as orchards in Gingin, Carabooda, Busselton, Manjimup, and Pemberton reach full maturity.
