Rainfall in California boosts avocado growth

Currently, the supply of avocados, primarily from Mexico, remains steady through March and April, according to Peter Shore of Calavo Growers Inc. In California, the season is just beginning, with a gradual increase in supply each week until it peaks in mid- to late April and extends through June, with fruit available until August.

Regarding sizes, the most common calibers are 48, 60, and 70, with less volume in larger sizes such as 40. This year, the proportion of small fruit is progressive, from caliber 84 down to 48, and then decreases in the larger sizes.

The recent rains in California are considered beneficial for the crop, as the trees are healthy and sunny weather is expected in the coming weeks, which will contribute to the fruit's growth.

Overall, supply is similar to last year, and demand remains high, especially during the first two quarters of the year, coinciding with the spring season and outdoor activities like barbecues. Calavo is preparing its Peruvian avocado program for the summer months to meet this continued demand.
