Peruvian Avocado: A Global Leader with New Challenges and Opportunities
Established as the world's second largest exporter, the avocado industry in Peru seeks to face challenges and open new markets under the leadership of ProHass.
Peru concluded its latest season with nearly 550,000 tons of avocados exported, solidifying its position as the world's second-largest exporter. According to José Antonio Castro, president of ProHass, this industry is crucial not only for the foreign exchange and jobs it generates, but also for its international impact. Currently, Peruvian avocados lead the European market with 41% of the market share and reach 69 countries, strengthening the country's presence as a global player.
Under Castro's leadership, ProHass seeks to expand the association's representation, optimize resources, and promote sustainability within the industry. Furthermore, the organization is working with the government and Senasa (the National Agrifood Health and Quality Service) to open new markets in Asia and Oceania, focusing on innovative formats such as frozen avocados and avocado oil. Recent agreements, such as the one signed with China, reinforce this strategy of diversification and added value.
However, challenges remain: production costs, climate impact, logistical constraints, and the entry of new international competitors are putting pressure on the sector. To overcome these, ProHass prioritizes productivity, exportable quality, and the global promotion of Hass avocados as essential pillars for ensuring the sustainable growth of this industry.
