India seeks to import avocados from Brazil to reduce costs
In an effort to stabilize avocado prices in the domestic market, India is preparing to import Brazilian avocados for the first time starting in February 2025.
India is set to import avocados from Brazil, a move that forms part of an agricultural agreement currently being negotiated between the two countries. This initiative aims to address the high prices of the fruit in the domestic market, which currently range from 100 to 2,000 rupees (US$1.20-24) per kilogram, depending on the variety. Avocado imports will be permitted under India's Open General License (OGL), with Brazil initially supplying Hass avocados.
Negotiations between Indian buyers and Brazilian sellers are already underway, and contracts are expected to be finalized soon. Brazil, one of the world's largest avocado producers, plans to export smaller avocados, which are less commonly consumed in its domestic market. Shipments of these avocados could begin in February 2025, with the aim of introducing Brazilian avocados to Indian consumers, stabilizing prices, and offering more affordable options compared to currently imported varieties.
To promote this new trade collaboration, Brazil's export promotion agency, ApexBrasil, will host a workshop in Mumbai at the end of August. This event aims to familiarize Indian stakeholders with the flavors and quality of Brazilian avocados, thereby facilitating the acceptance of this new offering in the Indian market. Until now, Indian demand for avocados has been met primarily by imports from Tanzania, Australia, New Zealand, Peru, and the United States.
