The importance of irrigation and nutrition in the quality of avocados after harvest

Orchard management is emerging as a critical stage in the production of quality avocados, crucial for satisfying international markets such as Europe and Asia. In an exclusive interview with Frutas de Chile, Bruno Defilippi, an expert in the physiology and post-harvest technology of fruits, vegetables, and flowers at the INIA La Platina Regional Research Center, emphasized the vital importance of proper orchard management. He highlighted the influence of agroclimatic factors and cultivation practices on fruit quality, underscoring the need to address post-harvest challenges to meet the demands of distant markets.

Defilippi identified emerging post-harvest challenges, noting logistical and timing issues in distribution to distant markets, which have led to the sale of avocados at advanced stages of ripeness. He emphasized the importance of maintaining overall product quality, focusing on appearance, texture, flavor, and food safety. He also highlighted the need to adapt to climate change and weather events, such as the prolonged drought in Chile, which have significantly impacted avocado production.

The specialist outlined strategies for producers and exporters, highlighting the importance of optimal harvesting and the implementation of post-harvest technologies, such as controlled atmosphere storage, to extend the fruit's shelf life. He emphasized the need to optimize sanitation processes and adapt to dynamic climate changes. Ultimately, he underscored the producers' continuous adaptation and search for solutions to meet the challenges of the global market and changing weather conditions.
