The growing demand for avocados presents challenges for importers

The global avocado market continues to grow, with clear challenges for importers, according to Elena Rogojnikova of The Greenery, who points to a growing difficulty in meeting demand for the superfood and ensuring an adequate supply.

Weather problems in Colombia impacted last year's harvest, although a 50% increase in volumes is expected for 2024, while in Peru a 25% decrease is anticipated, with a slight shortage of large sizes.

The crisis in the Red Sea has negatively impacted the supply of African avocados, especially from Kenya and Tanzania, due to long transit times, diminishing Europe's attractiveness as a market. In Israel, labor shortages and rain have limited supply, driving up prices, although the quality of the avocados has been outstanding.

Meanwhile, the South African season is underway, with the harvest of the Maluma Hass and Fuerte varieties. Although the Maluma Hass harvest started with some delays due to the dry matter content and the abundance of the crop, a good volume and quality are expected for the South African season. The first Fuerte avocados are already being harvested and packed this week, boding well for a promising season for South African growers.
