California's avocado harvest is exceeding expectations, with strong demand as the season draws to a close.
California's avocado production has reached over 143 million kilograms, exceeding initial forecasts thanks to favorable weather conditions and improved farming practices. The season will extend through September, with stable demand continuing to grow.
California's avocado harvest has exceeded initial expectations, reaching over 143 million kilograms through the week ending August 16. This significantly larger volume than last season is due to abundant rainfall and optimal weather conditions that have boosted production, particularly during July and August. According to Terry Splane, vice president of marketing for the California Avocado Commission, the season, which typically ends in late August, will extend into September, albeit with reduced volume.
Last year, California's avocado production was 107.5 million kilograms, the lowest since the 2008/09 season. A slightly lower harvest was expected for the current season, but favorable weather and improvements in farming practices have resulted in a significant increase in production. This year, the peak supply period has extended beyond expectations, allowing for a steady supply in the market. Splane notes that the California Avocado Commission will continue to support customers who continue to market the fruit as supplies decrease toward the end of the season.
Despite the approaching end of the season, demand for avocados in California remains stable and is growing. Although the industry historically tends to slow down in the fourth quarter, the 2024 marketing campaign has exceeded expectations, achieving greater consumer engagement through videos, digital programs, and personalized content. Positive feedback from buyers also underscores the success of these efforts, and the Commission is already planning for a promising 2025 season.
