Kwanza Fresh anticipates an increase in demand for Tanzanian avocados as the peak season approaches.
Kwanza Fresh sales representative Irene Appolinary Undiri notes that Tanzania's peak avocado export season is approaching. This season, which runs from February to July, is characterized by greater ease in achieving optimal fruit quality and volume compared to the off-season, which occurs between November and January.
The growth of avocado cultivation in Tanzania has been remarkable in recent years, becoming a major export crop since 2009. According to the Tanzania Horticulture Association (TAHA), avocado exports have seen a significant increase, reaching 11,237 tons in 2021 and valued at over $33 million.
Undiri highlights the interest in expanding avocado exports to the European market, especially the Netherlands, and to the Chinese market. However, to enter the Chinese market, it is crucial to comply with strict phytosanitary regulations and quality standards.
Regarding the challenges Kwanza Fresh faces, Undiri mentions the need for capital to expand the company and improve infrastructure, such as building a cold storage facility. Despite these challenges, the company is focused on expanding its customer base in India and preparing for the peak season, aiming to improve fruit quality and extend shelf life.
