Jumbo Belgium innovates with the presentation of the first avocado scanners

Finding the perfect avocado at the supermarket can be a challenge due to their variability in ripeness, but the Jumbo supermarket chain has implemented an innovative solution in Belgium. Jumbo stores in Ranst and Veurne now feature a device known as an "avocado scanner," an X-ray machine that reveals the avocado's internal condition.

The popularity of the avocado, nicknamed "green gold," has grown exponentially, becoming an essential ingredient in everything from guacamole to trendy toast. However, selecting the perfect one can often be tricky. Thanks to the recent launch of Jumbo's avocado scanner, this search is now significantly easier.

This device, now available at Ranst and Veurne branches, instantly assesses avocado ripeness. By placing the avocado in front of the scanner, the device uses a mini-X-ray to analyze the fruit's sugar, water, and starch levels in seconds. With this data, it determines the internal texture and displays the degree of ripeness, eliminating the need to press the fruit to assess its condition.

Philippe Calliauw, owner of Jumbo Ranst, highlighted that this scanner allows customers to select the perfect avocado without damaging the fruit, improving the shopping experience. Siska Abeele and Justin Robaeys, from Jumbo Veurne, noticed an increase in avocado sales and greater customer interest since the scanner's installation, benefiting both shoppers and the store.

The introduction of this scanner in Belgium, following its debut in the Netherlands last year, is part of a trial to assess its viability in other locations. This advancement not only improves avocado selection but also reflects Jumbo's commitment to innovation in customer service.
