Boost to avocado exports: county secures $302 million deal (KES)
The Uasin Gishu County Government, in collaboration with the British High Commission, is taking substantial steps to attract investment and stimulate economic growth in the region. A notable achievement is the successful securing of a 302 million KES investment, in partnership with the British High Commission and the Sustainable Urban Economic Development (SUED) Programme. This investment will be used to establish a packing facility dedicated to the production of avocados, passion fruit, and edible oil for export.
During a recent visit, Governor Dr. Jonathan BiiChelilim hosted Dr. Dominic Biwott, the British High Commission's Northern Rift Programme Advisor, and representatives from Price Waterhouse Coopers (PwC) to discuss this important opportunity. Dr. Bii expressed his enthusiasm for the venture, emphasizing its importance to avocado farmers and assuring his administration's support in providing seedlings. "We now have a committed investor to establish a packing facility, facilitating the export of avocados and passion fruit, along with the production of edible oil," he announced.
Fresh Product, identified through a rigorous process led by PwC, is expected to begin operations in Eldoreten within the next six months. Governor Bii noted that the program is actively seeking investors for a corn mill and a potato storage facility in the county. He expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts with the British High Commission, the Sustainable Urban Economic Development Programme, and PwC during his visit to the county.
