GLC Cerritos celebrates the close of its promising second avocado season
Avocado production in Jalisco, Mexico, has been a recent success story, marking a milestone by gaining access to the U.S. market two years ago. This achievement is particularly significant for GLC Cerritos, a company located in Ventura County, California, which is now concluding its second production season in the region. Jalisco's geographic location allows for a different harvest schedule than Michoacán, Mexico's leading avocado-producing state, resulting in a more consistent supply across multiple seasons.
Currently, Jalisco contributes approximately 8% of Mexico's monthly avocado production, although a decrease is expected during May and June. GLC Cerritos has not only proven to be a strong player in the industry thanks to its sustainable production practices, but has also achieved GlobalGAP and Rainforest Alliance certifications for its entire growing area, reaffirming its commitment to ethical and sustainable practices.
However, the industry is not without its challenges. The drought in Mexico has tightened supply and driven up prices, benefiting producers but presenting challenges for retailers. Given this situation, discussions are underway regarding the possibility of bringing forward the start date of the 2024-25 harvest, which could alleviate some of these challenges, especially for producers in Jalisco.
In response to these challenges and opportunities, GLC Cerritos plans to highlight its sustainability efforts, its new packaging machine, and its sales philosophy at the upcoming Viva Fresh trade show in Houston. Its focus is clear: efficiency, sustainability, and quality—principles that guide both the production and marketing of its avocados, ensuring the fruit spends the least amount of time possible between the tree and the table.
