The Philippines opens its market to Peruvian Hass avocados following a bilateral phytosanitary agreement
The new protocol between SENASA and the Philippine Bureau of Plant Industry will allow the entry of Hass avocados from Peru, strengthening trade ties and guaranteeing high food safety standards.
The Philippines has officially approved the import of Hass avocados from Peru, following months of technical negotiations between the two countries. The agreement, ratified by the Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) and the National Agrarian Health Service (SENASA), establishes a rigorous phytosanitary protocol that defines the conditions for the safe export of the Andean fruit to the Asian market. This aims to expand agricultural trade and strengthen international cooperation in plant health.
The BPI highlighted that the document “symbolizes the trust and mutual commitment to advance plant health, market access, and agricultural trade between the Philippines and Peru.” For its part, SENASA celebrated the signing of the work plan and indicated that Peruvian table grapes and citrus fruits could soon be added to exports to the Philippines under the same bilateral agreement.
The opening of the Philippine market comes at an opportune time for the expansion of Peruvian Hass avocados in Asia. According to PhilStar Global, the fruit is increasingly appreciated by Filipino consumers due to its flavor, creamy texture, and compact size—characteristics that are driving demand in both supermarkets and the food industry. The agreement is expected to help stabilize the local supply during the off-season and offer more competitive prices to consumers in the Asian country.
