Avocado display enters the Guinness Book of World Records
The Rio Grande Latin Market in Dallas, Texas, breaks world record with the display of 260,292 avocados, highlighting the importance of access to nutritious food.
The El Rio Grande Latin Market supermarket chain has entered the Guinness World Records for mounting the largest fruit display to date, with a total of 260,292 avocados (86,746 pounds) at its Dallas, Texas location. This impressive display surpassed the previous record held by Jewel-Osco, which in 2022, in collaboration with Del Monte Fresh, displayed 77,000 pounds of bananas in Westmont, Illinois.
After receiving the award, El Río Grande Latin Market offered avocados at a special price of 5 for $1, seeking not only to break a record but also to promote access to nutritious food for underserved communities. The store emphasized that the event had a deeper purpose than mere exhibition, alluding to its commitment to the nutrition and well-being of local communities.
Dallas, especially its southern and northeastern parts, faces large areas known as "food deserts," where access to fresh produce is limited. In this context, avocados, which dominate the agricultural market in Texas, play a crucial role. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the ports of Pharr and Laredo are the main entry points for avocados from Mexico, one of the largest suppliers of this popular "green gold" in the country.
