Scenarios and opportunities awaiting the rural sector of Jalisco in the coming year
In 2024, despite being considered a "good year" for agriculture in Jalisco, the sector will face several challenges. These include the drop in international corn prices, which will affect local producers, as well as the persistent shortage of agricultural workers and water scarcity. Furthermore, strong competition from South American producers, especially in the U.S. market, is anticipated in the cultivation of avocados and berries.
The president of the Jalisco Agri-Food Council (CAJ), Roberto de Alba Macías, stated that the international price of corn, currently around 5,000 pesos per ton, is below producers' expectations, causing concern. Likewise, products such as avocados and berries, which have historically enjoyed economic prosperity, are also showing a downward trend due to increased production in South America, primarily in Peru and Colombia.
Amid these challenges, the need to diversify markets, especially focusing on Asian countries, is highlighted as an alternative for Jalisco producers. The president of the CAJ emphasizes the importance of government support for the internationalization of local products, requesting backing for trade missions and the promotion of Jalisco products.
In response to these challenges, a call to action is being made, proposing a "grand pact for the agricultural sector" that involves producers, authorities, and all links in the production chains. The importance of diversifying production areas is emphasized as a strategy to increase competitiveness and productivity in the sector.
