In 2023, the avocado sector in Colima experienced economic challenges due to low prices

In 2023, avocado production in Colima faced difficulties due to unfavorable prices that negatively impacted the sector, according to Jerónimo Cárdenas Ochoa, vice president of the State Council of Avocado Producers. He explained that these unfavorable prices were not related to the quality of the product, but rather to various economic factors.

Cárdenas Ochoa expressed his hope that prices will not decline and will stabilize in 2024, allowing for a recovery for avocado producers in the region. He highlighted that the municipalities of Comala and Cuauhtémoc are the leading avocado producers, especially of the Méndez and Has varieties. These municipalities have approximately 1,000 hectares already established and another 400 hectares under development.

Focusing on improving the quality and quantity of production, efforts are underway to combat pests and increase export capacity. Although the primary market for avocados is domestic, a significant portion of the production is exported to Canada, where the quality of avocados produced in the state of Colima is recognized.
