The strategic role of the Netherlands in Colombian fruit exports
Avocados top the list of Colombian fruits exported to the Netherlands, followed by bananas, passion fruit, goldenberries, plantains, and Tahiti limes. In an exclusive interview with Jan Willem van Bokhoven, director of the Colombian-Dutch Chamber of Commerce, we explored the trade dynamics between the two countries and the burgeoning tropical fruit market.
According to van Bokhoven, the trade relationship has evolved significantly in recent decades, shifting from mining and energy products to a focus more on agricultural goods. The Netherlands has become one of the top five destinations for Colombian exports, standing out as the most important market after the United States.
The director highlighted the exponential growth of Colombian tropical fruit exports to the Netherlands, with avocados leading the way, followed by gulupa, granadilla, and cape gooseberries. The Netherlands has established itself as a gateway to Europe, a market of 550 million people with significant purchasing power.
However, the sector faces challenges, including global shipping, climate change, and increasing demands for sustainability from the European market. Product quality and traceability are key aspects for Dutch consumers.
Van Bokhoven highlighted Colombia's growth potential in exporting a wide range of fruits, including Tahiti limes, Kent mangoes, and soursop. The Colombian-Dutch Chamber of Commerce plays a crucial role in connecting importers and exporters, facilitating the export process, and supporting small businesses in entering the international market.
