The avocado's summer renaissance after a challenging winter

The European avocado market is gearing up for a summer full of opportunities after a winter marked by scarcity and high prices. Annabel Könst, purchasing manager for Nature's Pride in the Netherlands, anticipates improved availability in the coming weeks, with a predominance of smaller avocados. However, she emphasizes that market balance will depend on the combined efforts of all stakeholders.

Könst notes that the current market offers a variety of avocados, both Mediterranean and overseas, from countries such as Spain, Colombia, Peru, South Africa, Israel, Kenya, and Tanzania. With the Mediterranean season drawing to a close, attention is shifting towards South Africa and Peru.

Regarding the Peruvian supply, one of the main providers, it has experienced a decrease this season due to various factors, including the effects of El Niño in the north. Despite this, an improvement in availability is expected, especially in the higher altitude regions of the interior. However, the presence of uncertified and low-quality products in the market disrupts stability, something that Nature's Pride prioritizes in its operations.

Regarding supply from the north, a gradual increase is expected from week 18/19, although with a volume between 30 and 50% lower than the previous year. Central regions also show reduced availability, while a slight improvement is observed in the south, although strong demand from other markets limits its impact on Europe.

South Africa, for its part, has faced logistical and climatic challenges that have affected its supply capacity, although a larger volume is expected to arrive on the market in May and June.

Other suppliers such as Colombia, Kenya, and Tanzania are also present in the summer market, with a supply that meets expected demand. Furthermore, the importance of informing consumers about the health benefits of avocados and promoting their culinary versatility is emphasized, with initiatives such as the 'Avocado All Day' campaign in collaboration with the World Avocado Organization.

The avocado market in Europe is expected to experience greater stability this summer, with sufficient supply to meet demand and opportunities to educate and motivate consumers about this nutritious and versatile fruit.
