The avocado market in Mexico: Booming exports and challenges for domestic consumption

Mexico remains the world's largest avocado producer, but the growth in domestic demand and exports presents significant challenges for the industry in 2024.

The avocado, prized for its flavor and nutritional benefits, has solidified Mexico's position as the world's largest producer, accounting for 35% of global supply. Jalisco stood out in 2024 with exports distributed to the United States (48%), Canada (22%), Japan (20%), and Europe (8%). Despite these exports, domestic consumption remains crucial, as Mexicans continue to demand large quantities of this fruit, a symbol of the national cuisine.

Despite its success in the international market, a study by the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) warns that global demand for avocados exceeds production, posing challenges for supplying both the local and international markets. In 2023, Mexican exports to the United States reached a value of $2.7 billion, while per capita consumption in Mexico reached 11 kg, making the country the world's largest consumer of avocados.

With over 50% of production destined for the domestic market, it is crucial to strengthen the quality and safety of avocados consumed in the country. Producers in Michoacán and Jalisco lead both exports and local supply, but growing demand requires a rigorous approach to maintaining high standards and ensuring that the domestic market receives the highest quality fruit.
