The avocado tree: care and benefits of having it in your home

Avocados are all the rage, dominating social media and appearing in various diets. Despite its scientific name, Persea americana, cultivating them is a challenge for gardening enthusiasts, but not impossible. Planting an avocado tree offers a generous supply of fruit at affordable prices. Want to grow your own avocado tree? Here's how!

The fruit, whose sales are on the rise in Spain, is rich in healthy fats, vitamins, potassium, minerals, and fiber. Recent studies suggest that consuming more than one avocado a day helps prevent cardiovascular disease and intestinal problems thanks to its nutrients and omega-3 fatty acids.

When should you plant an avocado tree?

If done outdoors, it's best between late spring and early summer, as winter can be harmful to the young tree. If done indoors, the season is not relevant.

How to plant in a pot?

Choosing a small tree speeds up the process. Select a cold-resistant variety, prepare a large pot with acidic substrate, plant the tree, fertilize it, water it, and prune it back to 60 cm in height to encourage branching.

How to plant from seed?

The process is longer and more detailed, starting by extracting and cleaning the seed, placing it in a container with water and transplanting it to a pot when the root reaches 10 cm.

Growing avocados takes time, between 3 or 4 years if it is grafted and between 6 and 10 years if it is pure.
