Tropical avocado and chocolate orange: exotic choices at Les Halles du Verger

On its first anniversary, wholesaler Les Halles du Verger analyzes exotic fruit trends, highlighting the popularity of chocolate oranges and the potential of tropical avocados.

During the holiday season, Les Halles du Verger, which celebrated its first anniversary in September, showcased exotic fruits, though the results were mixed. According to Ulrich Boisnay, the company's director, inflation and declining purchasing power negatively impacted sales of out-of-season fruits, with figures significantly lower than in previous years. However, one product stood out: the chocolate orange. This Spanish variety, recognizable by its brown hue, has become a star ingredient during the holidays, especially in large supermarket chains. While its flavor doesn't differ significantly from a traditional orange, its unique appearance adds a special visual touch to holiday tables.

On the other hand, the tropical avocado from the Dominican Republic, also part of the December assortment, is seen as an undervalued product. Ulrich Boisnay points out that its creamy texture and aromatic profile offer a different experience from the traditional avocado found on European supermarket shelves. “It’s a product with great potential, which could increase its market share with consistent, year-round efforts,” Boisnay stated, underscoring the growing interest in this type of specialty avocado.

Les Halles du Verger is betting on these offerings to differentiate itself in an increasingly competitive market. While the chocolate orange consolidates its popularity during the Christmas season, the tropical avocado is emerging as a promising option, ready to win over consumers seeking quality and uniqueness.
