Moroccan avocados with record projections for 2023/24

The avocado industry in Morocco is experiencing an unprecedented boom, with significant growth in both export volume and the revenue it generates for the country. According to EastFruit, the 2023/24 season is expected to set a new record for avocado exports, continuing the positive trend of previous years.

Between July 2023 and January 2024, Morocco reached a record high by exporting nearly 40,000 tons of avocados, generating $120 million in revenue. Although a decrease in volume is anticipated from February to May 2024, the 2023/24 season is expected to close with unprecedented figures, potentially exceeding 60,000 tons in exports according to preliminary projections.

This remarkable increase, 20% compared to the previous year, is largely due to optimal weather conditions and the expansion of cultivated areas. However, challenges such as persistent droughts and reduced government subsidies for irrigation threaten this momentum.

The Moroccan export market faces the challenge of its concentration in a few destinations, primarily four EU countries—Spain, France, the Netherlands, and Germany—along with the United Kingdom. Although efforts are underway to diversify markets, progress is slow. Exports to destinations outside the main importers fluctuate seasonally, though there are signs of openness to new markets, notably the recent start of direct shipments of Moroccan Hass avocados to Georgia.
