Kenyan avocados conquer new markets and spark global interest
Kenya, known for its tropical climate, is on track to become a year-round supplier of avocados. Paul Kyalo, managing director of Konza Tropicals Limited, a tropical fruit exporter, says that avocado production in Kenya is expanding into new regions, such as the Rift Valley, which will allow for a consistent supply of the fruit.
Demand for Kenyan avocados is booming, driven by several factors. Access to the Chinese market and exports to Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa (MENA) have eased price pressures in Europe. Furthermore, Kenya's Horticultural Crops Directorate is adjusting the avocado season timeline, which is now expected to begin on March 1, 2024.
Kenyan producers are investing in sustainable avocado production, with new orchards under development. Exporting companies are collaborating with smallholder farmers to improve avocado quality at the farm level. Significant investments are also being made in packing and cold storage facilities.
Despite the progress, concerns remain regarding the requirements for exporting avocados to China, particularly the methyl bromide fumigation protocol, which can affect fruit quality. Kyalo has expressed its intention to work with the authorities to reconsider this requirement.
Finally, rain is crucial for avocado cultivation in Kenya. Kyalo is optimistic about the rainfall and crop prospects for the upcoming season, although logistics remain a challenge due to the situation in the Red Sea.
