The Spanish avocado: Growth and challenges in a competitive market

With a promising harvest and a focus on quality, sustainability and proximity, Spanish avocados seek to consolidate their leadership in Europe despite growing international competition.

The 2024 season is shaping up to be a positive year for Spanish avocados, with increased production and larger fruit sizes thanks to favorable weather conditions in the Axarquía region of Málaga. Marta Sanjuán, CEO of Montosa, highlighted that rainfall and good flowering boosted this production recovery. However, achieving this has required responsible water resource management, key to ensuring the crop's sustainability.

Spanish avocados are entering the market in a competitive landscape, facing abundant supply from Mexico, Chile, and Colombia, and a growing presence from Morocco. However, the Spanish product stands out due to its proximity to European markets, which guarantees freshness, superior flavor, and a reduced carbon footprint. These advantages position it as a preferred choice for conscious consumers.

Sanjuán emphasized that January represents a strategic window for Spanish avocados, as volumes from South America decrease. In this context, Montosa is preparing to meet demand with avocados harvested at their peak ripeness and efficient logistics services.

Among the most significant challenges, competition from Moroccan avocados stands out due to their lower production costs and larger size. However, Montosa is committed to rigorous quality controls, supported by its own multi-residue laboratory, which ensure maximum food safety. Furthermore, the company distinguishes itself by offering customized services such as specific formats, ripening, and logistics tailored to its clients' needs.

With a strong presence in key markets such as France, Spain, the United Kingdom, and Germany, Montosa is working to expand its reach into new European markets and consolidate its leadership in the sector. “Our focus is on excellence and adaptability, seeking not only to offer a product of the highest quality, but also solutions that add value in an increasingly competitive market,” concludes Sanjuán.
