Avocados will shine at the 16th edition of Fruit Attraction

Avocados will be the star product at the 16th edition of Fruit Attraction, organized by IFEMA MADRID and FEPEX, which will take place from October 8 to 10 in Madrid. This event will highlight various initiatives surrounding this superfood, whose success has grown significantly in recent years in both cultivation and exports.

On Monday, October 7, the Avocado Congress will kick off its activities, further solidifying the avocado's international standing. During Fruit Attraction, this fruit will be prominently featured in activities such as cooking demonstrations and other presentations led by Daniel del Toro, among others.

In recent years, avocado cultivation in Spain has experienced remarkable growth, expanding from traditional growing areas in the Canary Islands, the Costa Tropical of Málaga, and the Axarquía region of Málaga, to new areas in the provinces of Cádiz, Huelva, Alicante, Valencia, and Castellón. Furthermore, cultivation experiments are underway in regions such as Galicia, Asturias, and Cantabria.

Andalusia accounts for the majority of Spain's avocado production, with Malaga and Granada being the main producing provinces. However, cultivation is expanding to other provinces such as Cadiz, Huelva, and Seville. The European Union is the primary destination for Spanish avocado exports, with 122,784 tons exported in 2023. France and the Netherlands absorb more than 50% of these exports, representing a total economic value of approximately €400 million.

Mexico is the world's largest producer and consumer of avocados, with approximately 30% of global production destined primarily for the US market. Peru and Chile also export a significant portion of their production, with European markets, and Spain in particular, being key destinations. Peru is the leading exporter of avocados to Spain, importing 133,011 tons in 2023, representing over 50% of Spain's total avocado imports.

Fruit Attraction, which will celebrate its 16th edition from October 8 to 10, expects the participation of more than 2,000 companies from 55 countries, occupying 70,000 m2 of fruit and vegetable offerings and an attendance of more than 100,000 professionals from 145 countries.
