Avocado consumption per capita in Chile reaches record levels, exceeding 8 kilograms per year
Avocado consumption in Chile has experienced an extraordinary increase, exceeding 400% in the last two decades, making it a staple food in the Chilean diet. According to a study by the consulting firm iQonsulting, Chile ranks among the world's leading consumers of this fruit, rising from 2 kg per person in 2000 to 8.2 kg in 2023.
This increase, particularly pronounced in the last five years, positions Chile as the second largest consumer of Hass avocados globally, second only to Mexico. José Gabriel Correa, president of the Chilean Avocado Committee, points out that more than 50% of national production is destined for domestic consumption, reflecting the intense competition in the national market.
Isabel Quiroz, CEO of iQonsulting, points out that the increased consumption is also due to the availability of Peruvian avocados during the off-season for domestic production. She further highlights the additional boost provided by the COVID-19 pandemic, as avocados are recognized for their nutritional properties that benefit the immune system. This growth in demand has driven significant development in the agricultural sector, estimated at over US$700 million annually, involving both small and large producers, as well as intermediaries and distributors.
