The Spanish avocado season begins with strong growth and a call to prioritize quality
The new avocado season in Spain is starting with an estimated increase of up to 30% in production, driven by improved weather conditions and the expansion of new growing areas. The IAM (International Organization for Avocado Management) emphasizes the importance of not harvesting Hass avocados prematurely to preserve the quality and prestige of the national product.
The Spanish Interprofessional Organization for Avocado and Mango (OIAM) reported that the 2025 avocado season is starting with very positive expectations, projecting a production increase of between 20% and 30% compared to the previous year, when production exceeded 75,000 tons. This growth is attributed to the recovery of the Axarquía region (Málaga) following spring rains and the development of the crop in regions such as Cádiz, Huelva, and the Valencian Community.
During the first few weeks, early varieties such as Bacon, Fuerte, Zutano, and Ettinger are harvested, while the Hass avocado—the most in-demand variety—will reach its optimal ripeness in mid-November. Given this, the OIAM (International Association of Avocado Producers) urged producers and distributors to avoid premature harvesting, emphasizing that quality is key to maintaining consumer confidence and the sector's competitiveness.
Spain thus consolidates its position as the main avocado producer in Europe, combining sustained growth with a firm commitment to product excellence and the sustainability of the domestic and export markets.
