Colombia triples avocado shipments to the United States in the first half of 2024
The growing demand for avocados in the United States and the improved quality of the Colombian product are driving a significant increase in exports. Eastern cities like Miami and Boston are registering the largest increases in sales.
In the first half of 2024, Colombian avocado exports to the United States tripled in volume compared to the same period of the previous year, according to revised data from the Colombia Avocado Board (CAB) and the Hass Avocado Board (HAB). This increase reflects the growing demand for avocados in the U.S. market, currently the world's largest importer of this fruit. The expansion of cultivated areas in Colombia and the maturation of the trees since the country's entry into the market in 2020 have been key factors in this growth.
Manuel Michel, CEO of CAB, highlighted that this increase in demand for Colombian avocados underscores the improved quality and reliability of the product, as well as the growing preference among U.S. consumers for avocados year-round. This phenomenon is opening new opportunities for Colombian suppliers, solidifying the country's position as a key player in supplying avocados to the United States.
The growth in unit sales of avocados has been particularly notable in eastern U.S. cities such as Miami, Boston, and Louisville. According to Ricardo Uribe, president of CAB, this increase in demand highlights the exceptional quality and flavor of Colombian avocados, which are gaining increasing recognition in the U.S. market. With more than 400 certified orchards and 27 packing plants, Colombia is well-positioned to continue expanding its presence in this market.
