Colombia anticipates a strong boost in avocado production by 2024
Avocado producers and exporters in Colombia have high hopes for 2024 after a challenging 2023 season marked by heavy rains. Mauricio Moranth Zuluaga, a representative of Montana Fruit, noted that the La Niña phenomenon affected productivity for almost three years, resulting in a 50% reduction in production.
However, the outlook has improved. Last year, Hass avocado exports increased significantly thanks to better weather conditions and new plantings. Moranth anticipates an even greater increase in production for 2024 due to El Niño and increased flowering.
Key markets, such as Europe and the United States, are showing stable to high demand, which is contributing to favorable prices for Colombian avocados. Moranth emphasized Colombia's position as a leading supplier in Europe during the December-January-February season, achieving competitive prices.
For the U.S. market, Moranth identified a window of opportunity during the April-August season, with limited Mexican supply and most Peruvian fruit destined for Europe, which could result in more favorable prices for Colombian avocados.
In summary, Moranth expressed optimism for the future, projecting an 80% increase in Hass avocado exports by Montana Fruit and overall growth of 25-35% in avocado production in Colombia. These figures reflect a promising outlook supported by improved weather conditions and strong demand in international markets.
