Collaboration for the sustainable and orderly development of the avocado industry in Mexico
In a working meeting between authorities and representatives of the agribusiness, the challenges facing the avocado production chain in Mexico, vital for the development of various regions of the country, were addressed.
An agreement was reached to protect the industry's reputation and foster orderly growth, without changes in land use, by promoting responsible agricultural, packing, and marketing practices. Santiago Arguello Campos, General Coordinator of Agriculture at the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, expressed the agency's commitment to safeguarding the reputation and orderly growth of the Mexican avocado industry.
The meeting also included representatives from state governments and producer associations, who pledged to work together to promote sustainable and comprehensive growth in avocado production, packing, and marketing, while focusing on preserving ecosystems and biodiversity in producing regions. Emphasis was placed on the importance of complying with environmental legislation and highlighted the need to strengthen inter-institutional coordination and public-private partnerships to ensure the sector's sustainable development.
In addition, initiatives such as the Forest Guardian scheme, designed to prevent land use change in favor of avocado cultivation, were presented, and it was agreed to continue exchanging information and developing legal instruments to strengthen and regulate the sustainable production, packaging, and marketing of avocados in Mexico.
