Chile prepares for a successful Hass avocado season
Hass avocado production in Chile is expected to reach 200,000 tons this season, a 33.3% increase over last year, driven by favorable weather conditions. The domestic market will remain the priority, with 55% destined for national consumption.
Chile is preparing for an exceptional Hass avocado season in 2024-2025, with a projected harvest of 200,000 tons, representing a 33.3% increase compared to the 150,000 tons of the previous cycle. This increase in production is attributed to improved fruit set in the orchards, favored by optimal weather conditions, making this season the best in the last three years, according to the Chilean Avocado Committee.
The domestic market will continue to be a priority for Chilean producers, with 55% of total production, or 110,000 tons, destined for local consumption. "Chile is one of the world's largest consumers of Hass avocados, second only to Mexico. This reflects the strong tradition of avocado consumption in the country and the importance of the domestic market for this crop," stated Carmen Gloria Lüttges, president of the Chilean Avocado Committee.
Regarding exports, 90,000 tons of Chilean Hass avocados are expected to be shipped abroad, with Europe as the main destination, absorbing 74% of shipments. Latin America, Asia, and the United States will also receive a significant portion of the production, with 10.9%, 10.2%, and 5.3% respectively. "Argentina remains a key market in Latin America, where the Hass avocado has gained popularity thanks to its nutritional benefits and exceptional flavor," added Lüttges. The president of the trade association also emphasized that these figures will be updated as the season progresses, reflecting changes in production and demand.
