Chile becomes the main supplier of avocados in Europe with a 47% market share

The European avocado market closed week 42 with 1,007 imported containers, a volume virtually the same as the previous week—only 2% higher—but 78% higher than that recorded in the same week of 2024. Although the total flow of fruit remains stable, the share structure by origin has undergone a significant shift, marking a turning point in continental trade.

For the first time in several months, Peru is no longer the leading supplier of avocados to Europe. Chile has taken the top spot with 47% of total shipments, displacing the Andean nation, which has fallen to 25%. Colombia strengthened its presence with 10%—exceeding 100 containers per week—while Israel reached 6%, Kenya 5%, and Mexico and South Africa completed the picture with 3% each.

The increased participation from Chile and Israel was one of the most notable changes of the week. In contrast, Peru, South Africa, and Kenya showed declines in their volumes, with Peru's case being the most pronounced, with a 45% drop compared to the previous week.

In terms of prices, the market remains firm. In Rotterdam, medium sizes—between 18 and 22—saw an average increase of 15%, while the other sizes remained stable. In Spain, a 10% decrease was observed in the largest sizes (14 to 16), while medium sizes maintained their price.

According to analyst Jorge Molina, the European market is approaching a seasonal adjustment phase. Historically, between weeks 45 and 50, prices tend to fall due to the arrival of so-called "winter origins," which contribute greater volume to the continent.
