Brazil is betting on the growth of avocado plantations in response to increased consumption
The Brazilian Avocado Association highlights Brazil's drive to increase avocado production, both to meet growing domestic demand and to maintain its position in the international market.
Brazil, the world's sixth-largest avocado producer, is focusing its efforts on increasing avocado plantations. The Brazilian Avocado Association indicates that this push responds to the steady growth in consumption, both locally and internationally, where Brazil is consolidating its presence as a reliable supplier.
Despite the climate challenges that have affected fruit production in Brazil, the country has managed to increase its avocado plantation area from 10,900 hectares in 2016 to 16,400 hectares in 2020, representing a remarkable 50% increase. This growth is supported by new investments in the sector, including diversification into byproducts such as avocado oil.
The Southeast region of Brazil stands out as the country's main avocado producer, accounting for 83.2% of national production, with states like São Paulo and Minas Gerais leading the way. However, significant progress is being made in expanding the harvest in other states such as Ceará. Maria Cecilia Whately, president of the Brazilian Avocado Association, emphasizes the importance of maintaining high quality standards and certification to meet the increasingly demanding international market.
Whately emphasizes the need for robust marketing and communication strategies to boost avocado consumption in Brazil, which in turn will stimulate increased production. Quality and certification are key to maintaining competitiveness in a global market that increasingly values these attributes.
