Brazil opens new frontiers for avocados in Costa Rica

In a significant step forward for the Brazilian fruit industry, the Brazilian government and the Brazilian Association of Producers and Exporters of Fruits and Derivatives (Abrafrutas) celebrate the recent authorization by the Costa Rican government for the import of Brazilian avocados. This decision marks a new chapter in trade relations between the two countries and reinforces international confidence in Brazil's sanitary control system.

Brazil's Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA) highlighted that this opening will strengthen bilateral trade and underscores the growing global demand for Brazilian avocados. In 2022, domestic avocado production exceeded 338,000 tons, driven by increasing domestic and international demand. The main producing states include São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Paraná, and Espírito Santo, which continue to increase their production capacity to meet global market demands.

In 2023, Brazil exported more than 26,000 tons of avocados, generating revenue exceeding $39 million. Eduardo Brandão, director of Abrafrutas, expressed optimism regarding the potential of the Costa Rican market and assured that they will continue working to ensure Brazilian producers meet the highest quality standards. Furthermore, the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries (MAPA) reported that exporters will be able to begin shipping avocados to Costa Rica six months after the publication of the corresponding regulations, a crucial period for adjusting and preparing for trade operations.

This new access to the Costa Rican market not only promises to increase exports but also to consolidate Brazil's position as a leader in the global fruit sector. With continued support for producers, this opening is expected to contribute significantly to the sector's economic development and the promotion of Brazilian avocados abroad, further strengthening Brazil's presence on the international stage.
