Avohass (Kenya) aims to double avocado exports by the 2024 season

The avocado export season in Kenya officially began on March 1, 2024, and is expected to run until November of the same year. A significant increase in demand for quality seedlings has been highlighted recently, and government intervention to ensure high-quality supplies has been enthusiastically received. This focus on improving growing conditions aims to increase production volumes, resulting in improved fruit quality and size, thus satisfying both established and new customers.

Solomon Mumbi, CEO of Avohass Ltd., has expressed optimism regarding the upcoming season, noting plans to significantly increase production volumes. They estimate that total avocado production in Kenya will reach 445,650 metric tons by 2026, representing a 3.5% increase. This production increase aligns with the country's projections for that year, reflecting the positive momentum generated by new initiatives this season.

Currently, Avohass's main market is Europe, although they are exploring opportunities in emerging markets such as China and India, and hope to enter the Middle Eastern market. Solomon emphasizes that, despite increased production from other African countries, the Kenyan market will not be negatively affected, as there is ample room for all market players. More competition means improved product quality, which benefits both customers and the industry as a whole.

However, a potential challenge has been identified in maritime transport due to the situation in the Red Sea, which could affect shipping times to Europe. Avohass is closely monitoring the situation and considering alternatives such as air freight to ensure timely delivery of products to its customers.
