Arequipa faces delays in its Hass avocado production, but without affecting volume expectations
Juan Carlos Paredes, head of the Association of Hass Avocado Producers of Peru (ProHass), has recently highlighted that the avocado producing areas in Barranca, Lima, Ica and Arequipa are showing slower development this season, in contrast to the activity observed in Chiclayo, Trujillo and Áncash.
The total harvest is expected to be similar to last year's, which was around 570,000 tons. This forecast is based on current weather conditions, which have affected the flowering and fruit set stages due to the warm weather.
To address these challenges, Paredes suggests a strategy that limits excessive plant growth to promote production recovery by 2025. The tactic involves reducing nutrition and controlling plant vigor to prevent them from becoming too large and difficult to manage.
Furthermore, this season will see efforts to introduce Peruvian avocados to emerging markets like Malaysia, while maintaining their presence in established markets such as the United States and Europe. However, Paredes cautions that exports to new destinations may initially be modest while market response is assessed. With these measures, the Peruvian avocado sector aims to sustain its global relevance and remain a favorite among international consumers.
