Market Opening: Malaysia gives the green light to Peruvian Hass avocados after a decade of negotiations

Collaboration between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Agriculture, and the private sector has facilitated Peruvian Hass avocado producers' first shipments to Malaysia. After more than ten years of negotiations, the Malaysian Department of Agriculture formalized the phytosanitary requirements, paving the way for the immediate entry of Peruvian Hass avocados into the Malaysian market.

This achievement is the result of coordination between the Ministry of Agriculture, SENASA (National Agrarian Health Service), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Embassy in Malaysia, along with Peruvian producers. Through high-level meetings, the technical information required by the Malaysian government was provided to expedite market access authorization for Peruvian avocados, which will soon be available to Malaysian consumers.

According to reports, avocado imports in Malaysia have increased by 98% in the last five years, reaching USD 15 million in 2022. Australia leads as the main supplier (74%), followed by Kenya (10%) and New Zealand (3%).

Peru, as the world's second largest exporter of avocados, grapes and asparagus, has increased its avocado exports by 9% between January and September 2023, according to the Association of Exporters (ADEX).
