Hass avocado, a new addition to the carbon market

• The Hass Carbon Project allows Hass avocado producers in the country to connect to the carbon market through association, with initiatives to mitigate global warming.

• The first phase of the project has incorporated 28 producers and more than 1,600 hectares cultivated with Hass Avocado in Antioquia, Caldas and Risaralda, with which the certification of 19,028 carbon credits available for sale was achieved.

• This initiative contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals in the agricultural sector, in accordance with the country's institutional framework.

Small and medium-sized Hass avocado producers in the country are joining forces to bring to life the Hass Carbon Project, an initiative that seeks to mitigate Greenhouse Gases (GHG) to prevent ecological risk and counteract climate change and its impact on biodiversity.

Through this plan, the Colombian Hass Avocado agro-industry enters the carbon market with certificates that represent the reduction of GHG emissions and the contribution to zero deforestation.

"This project allows us to continue working to consolidate ourselves as an environmentally sustainable sector, which stands out for its good agricultural practices and which leverages rural labor formalization with the generation of more than 23,000 jobs, in 16 departments and more than 250 municipalities where the fruit is grown," said Katheryn Mejía Vergel, executive director of Corpohass, the association that brings together producers and exporters of this fruit.

According to the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, climate change is affecting Colombian agriculture with droughts, frosts, floods, and new pests. It can also cause desertification of at least 7.2% of the land.

The Hass Carbon Project is a response to this scenario, so that, with the use of technology and artificial intelligence, a model of association is strengthened that unites wills in favor of mitigating climate change and increasing awareness of its challenges and our responsibility to face them.

"The dream of linking avocado crops to a carbon project is now a reality. We are happy to support this process so that the sector can become a relevant player in mitigating climate change globally," said Esteban Gallo, leader of Forestry Consulting Group, the organization coordinating the initiative.

Carbono Hass strengthens the agricultural sector's commitment to focusing its efforts on sustainability. It also supports the differentiation strategy of Avocados from Colombia, its national brand, which positions it in global markets as a benchmark for quality and best practices, embodying sustainability at its core.
