Ecuadorian avocados facing climate challenges and conquering new markets
Ecuador
We are in the final stage of the current avocado season in Ecuador, completing the harvest of the flowering crop that began in January and extended through March. It has been a challenging period, marked by weather conditions that have impacted production volume, resulting in a 20% decrease compared to last year. However, the outlook for the next season fills us with optimism, as we expect not only to recover that loss but also to increase production by 30%.
As we prepare for the next harvest, projected for May and June, a key opportunity arises: to supply the local market with a high-quality product. This moment is crucial, as domestic demand remains a priority, and with current weather conditions, we anticipate that this year's fruit will surpass last year's quality.
On the other hand, ecological changes have not only impacted our region but have also generated alterations in the production cycles of the Northern Hemisphere, including Europe. This represents a strategic opportunity for Ecuador: to serve nearby markets with a product that stands out for its freshness and flavor.
One of the most anticipated milestones at the end of this campaign is the APHIS visit in June, which could mean the definitive opening of the United States market to our exports. This would not only diversify our business opportunities but could also mark a turning point in the expansion of the Ecuadorian avocado sector.
As we conclude this phase, we are already preparing the work plan for the next campaign, which will begin in September. Challenges remain, but so do opportunities. With appropriate strategies and a focus on quality, the sector can consolidate its position not only locally, but also in the most demanding international markets.
