Growing competition: challenges for Mexican avocados
Mexico
Last week, Mexico exported 17,777 tons of avocados to the U.S. market, representing 71% of the total harvest of 22,771 tons. However, the trend points to a significant drop in production for the current week, with a projection of around 16,000 tons due to increased supply from other origins, including Peru, California, and Colombia.
The decline in production is attributed to the increased presence of other origins in the U.S. market, such as Peru, California, and Colombia. This growing competition has led to Mexico losing market share week after week, and summer is expected to be the period with the lowest presence of Mexican fruit in the market.
The availability of hectares for harvesting has decreased by 11% compared to the previous week, with 27,811 hectares available. This places Mexico at its lowest point in fruit supply, a situation that is expected to continue throughout May and June.
The new harvest is expected to be available in June, with a low initial production that will increase week by week. It is crucial that consumption recovers and keeps the market as stable as possible during this transition period.
I wish you an excellent week.
