Stable supply of avocados for the month of May

After supplying the fruit needed for Cinco de Mayo, demand is experiencing a slight lull at the start of the week, with 76.8% of the harvest from week 17 being utilized, indicating a surplus in cold storage. Mexico, with over 85% of its harvest completed, expects to begin the new harvest in June, maintaining a stable size range, with sizes 48 and 60 being the most prevalent.

A total of 30,869 tons were harvested, and 23,712 tons were exported, leaving approximately 4,000 tons in cold storage along with fruit destined for other markets. This week began with a 25% decrease in the harvest and expectations of lower prices, as the market seeks to avoid accumulating inventory and balance sales and shipments.

The opening of Mexico's new fruit crop is expected in June, once it meets dry matter standards. Although California and other origins are gaining market share, no significant changes are expected at least through May, as Mexico will continue to dominate supply. Field supply remains stable this week compared to last week.

Despite the current stability, a change in supply is expected with the opening of the new local fruit harvest, which typically features medium-sized fruit. With one less harvest day this week, the backlog of inventory is expected to be released, thus maintaining a stable and balanced market at the beginning of May.
