Three origins compete: Mexico aggressively attacks the open market
Mexico
Mexico exported 790 containers to the U.S. market during week 26. This volume marks the end of the 2025-2026 season for statistical purposes, with a total of 1,251,000 tons, setting a record for Mexican exports to this market. Exports of fruit from the previous season will continue for several more days or even weeks, which is normal during this transition period.
Demand for Mexican fruit has been inconsistent and focused solely on certain sizes, posing a significant challenge for exporters who must manage the full size range and accommodate all sizes. This likely explains the significant price differences between importers and exporters, as each company quotes prices based on its specific size requirements. The new season's fruit size range will be heavily weighted towards 48s, 60s, and 70s, with very low percentages of 40s and larger.
The coexistence, or competition, among the three main origins seems to have affected Mexico the most. California has been moving significant volumes compared to previous seasons, and Peru is fulfilling its commitments without major setbacks. This leaves Mexico serving an open market where competition, even among Mexican fruit exporters and importers, has been fierce. Undoubtedly, the price imbalance experienced by Mexican fruit in May continues to take its toll on the industry.
The truth is that there is fruit in Mexico and it will have to find its place in this market or others; the harvest of Loco/Méndez fruit is abundant and undoubtedly any price advantage that Peruvian fruit may have had during the month of June will be greatly reduced in July, as the volume from Mexico continues to increase.
Other markets have generally followed the US trend, primarily Canada. Demand in this market has also been inconsistent, and the seasonal transition has not been smooth. Hopefully, in the coming weeks, the markets will reorganize, bringing greater stability and, above all, certainty.
