Mexico closes a challenging year: What does 2026 hold for the avocado market?
Mexico
Mexico exported 1,077 shipments of avocados to the United States during week 52. The decrease in exports is attributed to the recent holidays. The fruit supply was arguably better than expected; a good number of producers were harvesting, and demand was met. By the end of week 52, Mexico had exported 15% more fruit than the previous season, which, as mentioned earlier, is a record for the first six months of the season. Interestingly, it was reported that at least 100,000 tons of fruit from orchards certified for export to the United States were diverted to other markets, primarily the domestic market.
Fruit prices remained relatively stable throughout the week, with only size 40 experiencing some pressure and a price drop of one dollar per box. Smaller sizes continue to be the most in demand and are driving increased fruit production.
We are finishing a different kind of year for the Mexican industry: a first half with relatively high prices, which have been steadily declining since March, and a second half with prices below average and volumes above average. It has been a year of lessons learned. We have seen that competition from other origins is here to stay. Starting this year, the market will be multi-origin, primarily during the summer, but that period will surely expand year after year.
Next year will undoubtedly present significant challenges. We will continue to see high export volumes in the first weeks of the year, and the influx of fruit from other origins will occur under very different conditions than last year, when prices were relatively high. Each industry and the market will adjust to the circumstances as they arise. What we should expect, optimistically, is that avocado consumption will continue to grow in the United States market.
I wish that 2026 brings much satisfaction, good business and good health to the entire Avobook community.
