A tour of Europe: innovation and challenges in avocado cultivation
Peru
In recent weeks, we've had the opportunity to travel through Spain and Portugal, visiting different avocado-growing regions and farms. We've observed a significant increase in avocado production, which we believe is very important because it will generate greater consumption throughout the year and boost demand during the peak growing seasons in our countries.
One of the things that has most impressed us is the technology used in these crops. The use of cameras to measure tree leaf volume and, based on that, to provide targeted irrigation, apply pesticides and foliar sprays, and even fertilize according to plant and soil type, is an example of what we should implement in our fields to be more efficient and make our employees' work easier. There are many things I'm taking away as homework.
However, we have also observed that there are significant challenges to overcome, such as the lack of available labor and high labor costs. Companies are adopting mechanization strategies to address this challenge, and it is impressive to see the progress in this area.
Another major challenge is water availability, especially in southern Spain. Companies are innovating in irrigation systems to make them more efficient and address climate change, which is here to stay and is already a reality.
During our trip, we visited a company where they told us that some European companies have learned from the experience of Chile and Peru in developing avocado crops. A great source of pride! In fact, the management team at the packing plant was Chilean and they have contributed their experience and knowledge. This is very common in parts of Europe, especially on the Iberian Peninsula.
Avocado cultivation in Portugal is also very important, with large, technologically advanced areas. We are eager to revisit some large fields in Portugal (600 hectares) that are impeccably developed and will enter their second year of production next season.
In our next column, we'll tell you how these visits turned out and what else we learned about avocado farming in Europe. Stay tuned!
