From Chile to Europe: Baika's global expansion in the avocado market

Since its inception in 2010, Baika, a trading company, has worked tirelessly to position itself as a key player in the global avocado market. With a clear vision and ambitious goals, this Chilean company has successfully expanded its global presence, excelling in highly competitive markets such as the United States, Mexico, and Europe.

Baika recognized early on that establishing a presence in key markets was crucial to becoming a global avocado company. The United States, as the main consumer, and Mexico, as the largest producer, were the primary targets for strengthening their position. Through hard work and dedication, the company has achieved a solid presence in the global avocado market.

However, the real challenge and opportunity in Europe arose from observing the exponential growth of the European market. A decade ago, Europe wasn't a major consumer of avocados, but with a population of 500 million, the potential was immense. Today, consumption in Europe has jumped from 2 million kilos per week to 14-15 million kilos, and in some weeks it's approaching US levels.

Consolidation in Europe

To strengthen its presence in this expanding market, Baika acquired a majority stake in the Spanish company Tropical Millenium. This strategy not only allowed Baika to increase its distribution capacity but also to offer a wider range of products tailored to European needs.

Tropical Millenium, with its in-depth knowledge of the European market, has been an essential strategic partner. Together, Baika and Tropical Millenium have optimized the supply chain, serving supermarkets, wholesalers, and other intermediaries with a diverse offering of avocados in different sizes and qualities.

Furthermore, Baika's key to success in Europe lies in its ability to adapt to specific demands in a dynamic market, as the European landscape is highly diverse depending on the market. Countries like France have been major consumers, but consumption has grown throughout the region, with demand varying by country and season.

The inclusion of new production origins has also been fundamental. Peru, for example, has played a crucial role in the European market, offering high-quality avocados at competitive prices. Colombia, with its ability to produce avocados year-round, is also positioning itself as an important source.

Looking to the future

With projected sales of 18-20 million kilos in Europe by 2024, Baika has not only grown in volume but has also improved its ability to offer alternatives to both its end customers and its supplier clients. This growth, from 5 million kilos sold just five or six years ago, is a testament to the company's commitment to excellence and innovation.

By 2025, Baika plans to continue optimizing its supply chain and expanding its presence in key markets. Diversifying its sourcing and adapting to the needs of different customers, both consumers and suppliers, will remain fundamental pillars of its growth strategy, which is based on its own fruit but also on the many independent suppliers who have supported it in achieving these goals.

This is how Baika focuses not only on commercial growth, but also on sustainability and quality. The company works closely with local producers in different regions, offering support and training to improve agricultural practices and ensure a high-quality product. Furthermore, Baika is committed to environmental sustainability, implementing practices that minimize the ecological impact of its production and distribution.
