Mexican avocados in the U.S.: How Baika Mexico faces the challenges and takes advantage of the opportunities

The U.S. market is the epicenter of global avocado consumption, with growing demand exceeding nine pounds per capita annually. This preference for the fruit has made Mexico its main supplier, providing approximately 80% of the total avocados consumed in the country, according to data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Over the past ten years, demand for this fruit has shown steady growth, averaging 3.5% annually.

Baika Mexico has been part of this expansion of Mexican avocados in the U.S. market, strengthening its presence over the last four years thanks to its commercial alliance with Naturipe Avocado Farms and the continuous improvement of its quality and distribution processes. "We are becoming increasingly stronger in the market, thanks to the quality and service we offer our end customers," emphasizes Arturo Carrillo, the company's Procurement Manager.

One of the key factors driving the growth of Mexican avocados in the U.S. is their high quality and post-harvest handling. "Although there are more than 400 varieties of avocado in the world, the Hass is the most consumed globally, and Mexico has the largest production of this variety, which is distinguished by its unique flavor and ease of handling," says Omar Cervantes, Packing Manager at Baika Mexico.

Furthermore, Baika maintains strict quality controls to guarantee the freshness of its exported product. "We work with producers committed to best practices in the field, while at Baika we focus on proper handling and efficient traceability," explains Carrillo. In addition, the company prioritizes marketing fruit harvested within a few days of harvest so that it reaches the consumer in optimal condition.

However, the US market also presents significant challenges for avocado exporters. Beyond logistical aspects, the uncertainty surrounding the implementation of US tariffs represents a major hurdle.

"Our main challenge is to maintain steady growth in the market, developing business strategies that generate win-win relationships with our customers and producers," says Cervantes.

Despite these challenges, there are clear opportunities to continue expanding the presence of Mexican avocados in the U.S. One of Baika's objectives is to maintain a continuous export volume throughout the season and offer a wide variety of sizes to meet demand in different market segments.

Regarding the future of the sector, growth projections in Mexico vary by region. "In Michoacán, the areas available for new crops are limited, but in Jalisco there are more growth options with young orchards that will increase their production in the coming years," explains Carrillo.

To remain competitive, Baika is investing in innovations in production, packaging, and distribution. The company seeks to optimize its processes and strengthen its commercial platform to ensure that Mexican avocados continue to dominate the U.S. market. With a focus on quality, service, and efficiency, Baika Mexico continues to solidify its position as a key player in the avocado industry.
