Quality as a pillar of the growth of Peruvian avocados in international markets

Peru

According to a recent press release from ProHass, Europe would remain the main destination for Peruvian avocados, accounting for about 64% of the exported volume, while markets such as the United States and Asia continue to expand their share, with growing demand in countries such as China, Korea and Japan.

In a context of sustained expansion, the industry emphasizes that product quality is one of the fundamental pillars for maintaining the international position of Peruvian avocados. Among these pillars, it highlights harvesting only when the avocados reach a minimum of 22% dry matter, a key indicator for ensuring proper ripening and quality at the destination. Furthermore, the sector continues to strengthen its control and verification protocols through ongoing analysis, with the aim of meeting the demanding standards of international markets.

These mechanisms reflect the importance of having structured systems for monitoring and controlling production processes, especially in agricultural export sectors where small variations in crop management or harvest time can significantly affect the quality of the final product.

In this context, various international sustainability and management frameworks also promote approaches that strengthen these types of practices. The International Finance Corporation's (IFC) Performance Standards , for example, highlight the importance of organizations implementing management systems that allow them to identify risks, establish control procedures, and continuously monitor their operations . In particular, Performance Standard 1 raises the need for monitoring and verification mechanisms to maintain process consistency and ensure compliance with defined operating standards.

In addition, the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) standards also emphasize the importance of organizations having clear processes that support the quality and characteristics of the products they offer to the market. In this regard, GRI 416: Customer Health and Safety encourages companies to assess the potential impacts of their products on consumers and establish review and control mechanisms throughout the product lifecycle. Similarly, GRI 417: Marketing and Labelling emphasizes transparency in information about product characteristics and attributes.

In sectors like avocados, where international competitiveness depends heavily on product consistency and quality, the implementation of control, monitoring, and verification protocols becomes crucial. Beyond simply meeting commercial requirements, these systems reflect practices aligned with international management and reporting standards, contributing to strengthening market confidence and solidifying Peru's reputation as a reliable supplier of high-quality fruit.
