Week 29: Europe “gains strength”, prices adjust and origins are shaken up

Colombia

We've reached week 29 with an interesting market picture: while prices continue their downward trend in Europe, and in the US we see a slight (yet to be realized) attempt at recovery, Europe is emerging as the player seeking to expand its market share. This week, it's projected that the Old Continent could account for up to 64% of our total exports, a 10 percentage point jump from last week. Opportunity or risk? It depends on how we manage it.

In the field, prices for fruit destined for Europe are around COP 2,400/kg, and for the US they are around COP 2,700/kg, weighted averages based on current distributions. The size curve is improving relatively, good news for those who had been struggling with very small sizes, but dry matter content is accelerating, increasing the pressure on the entire production chain of our beloved Colombian Hass avocado.

From the outset, we've been making significant progress. Corpohass is leading new initiatives to safeguard standards, with the support of committed exporters. Positive signs are also emerging from the markets: importers are willing to prioritize origin, seeking higher quality even if it means sacrificing volume. This is an exciting shift, one that compels us to think long-term and build healthier, more sustainable relationships throughout the entire supply chain.

For now, logistics, the weather, public order, and the political landscape remain calm… at least on the surface. We know that we often only see the tip of the iceberg, and the situation can change rapidly. But for now, this calm is a good starting point.

And I'll close with a question I ask myself every week, and that I want to ask you today:

What would you do from your position to improve the quality of the origin?

Every opinion counts.
