Colombia is preparing for an abundant Hass avocado season
As we've been discussing in recent weeks, the off-season for Hass avocados in Colombia has come to an end, and the main season is fast approaching. A production volume increase of around 20% is projected compared to previous years, meaning we can expect a bountiful season.
Regarding fruit size, smaller sizes are being observed at the start of this season . However, the situation is expected to improve as the season progresses, especially in areas like Tolima and Cundinamarca.
As for farm-gate prices, they remain at attractive and high levels. Furthermore, payment by weight continues, and in some cases, advance payment options are being considered.
In terms of markets and exports, CorpoHass figures indicate that 20% of Colombian Hass avocado exports go to the United States, while the remaining 80% are shipped to Europe. It is worth noting that exports to Europe are on the rise.
In summary, the Hass avocado industry in Colombia is anticipating a prosperous season. However, there are some challenges that need to be addressed. The weather, for example, is a determining factor, as excessive rainfall could cause fruit to abort in the trees.
It is important that packing plants prepare for a significant increase in activity over the next three months . Likewise, other stakeholders in the supply chain must refine their forecasts to avoid operational disruptions.
Next week we will continue analyzing the evolution of the Hass avocado season in Colombia . We will be monitoring changes in prices, fruit quality, market behavior, and any other factors that may affect the development of this important economic activity in the country.
