Outlook for the Peruvian avocado harvest and the European market
ARTICLE
After a very atypical season in terms of Peruvian volumes, we are now experiencing peak production in the coming weeks, and naturally, the market will be somewhat affected. This will be just a few weeks before a general drop in volume. Unlike other years, when most of the fruit was large, this season the sizes have been heterogeneous, which has prevented the accumulation of stocks of any particular size and has resulted in a more fluid market.
The big question is what the end-of-season mix will look like. Will the orchards harvested in two passes have produced the desired size? Will the market become saturated because most exporters are focused on medium and small sizes?
Given the heterogeneity of this year's harvests in Peru, the lack of clarity and uncertainty about the actual sizes harvested for Europe caused medium and small sizes to reach a price rarely seen in the European market at this time of year.
The price stability of the previous 3 weeks, perhaps close to a possible maximum that the market could withstand without excessively affecting consumption, is being threatened by several arrivals of over 600 containers per week, where this week we see how the sizes, especially large ones, are beginning to suffer.
In terms of quality, we are currently experiencing a Peruvian campaign with quite acceptable quality for the European market, and the volumes that are beginning to arrive from Africa have a notable improvement in quality.
